Adventurous Food

ever since i got my pancake makers, i've been obsessed with making pancakes

(and naturally my weight shot up like that in a bullish market. yesh i've been reading up on financial stuff and i get a cheapthrill out of spouting jargons)

(anyway, that's not the area of concern today)

then i got bored eating pancakes with plain nutella or peanut butter. cheng is not just anybody! cheng is extraordinary! even in the what she feeds!

so i embarked on my quest for interesting spreads, and after days of research, i found out more than what i asked for...

Nutella with a Twist

your conventional good old nutella spread. (a digression: apparently nutella's not available in taiwan. hmm at least not very common. they have no idea what they're missing in life man)

before you start cursing cheng for tryin to pass off some mundane boring food as something extraordinary, this is not the full story...

you're suppose to eat the nutella spread with...

black pepper sprinkled on top.

major ewww factor.

but die hard fans swear by it. and it's supposed to be an European thingy.

(btw i checked wikipedia and they do add spices to chocolate. it is supposed to induce a certain chemical reaction that'd enhance the chocolaty taste)

so it's not like some weirdo invented the bizarre unlikely pair

think i'd try it one day. but i'm quitting pancakes for the time being. till the market looks more bearish (wohoo~ financial jargons~ i liike!)

Mee Goreng in a Pan Roti

this actually originated from Japan. it's something very common there, like kaya bread to Singaporeans lol.

actually the fried-noodle-bread doesnt strike me as something weird, bcos i know its existence as a kid so naturally i took it for granted - in the sense it's just another food item on the shelf (not that i've seen it in store, but i had read about it in Japanese manga :P).

but to the average Singaporean it's probably a odd combination.

a while ago i was obsessed with instant mee goreng (hmm that's another story) and as usual i wasn't contented with eating mee goreng as errr... mee goreng, so i made my own mee goreng roti~

hmm somehow when i say 'made my own', it feels like an insult to the whole DIY spirit. bascially you cut a hot dog bun open and stuff the mee goreng in. nothing technical or DIY-ish here hur hur.

anyway that's the first time and last time i'm doing it. the combination just tastes...WRONG :P

it reminds me of economics. theorectically sound but never applies in practice.

hur hur.

try it to believe it :P

What flavour's your Ice Cream?

ok eating ice cream with bread is nothing unusual. (i tried that with pancakes btw, it works equally well :D)

what's unusual, is what goes into your ice cream.

sureee, there're plenty of exotic flavours from the west, with not-very-helpful names like chunky monkey etc. but nothing beats what they have in Taiwan!~

rundown looking shop. but you know what they alwayz say: crouching tiger hidden dragon...(not the movie! the actual chinese meaning!)

the shop offers 73 flavours (for those who cant read chinese, i hope you read numbers :P), from the conventional vanilla , chocolate etc; to exotic fruits like honeydew, longan; liquor based flavours that range from soft beer to hard liquors; and lastly queer flavours that're beyond your imagination..

some of the more representative ones...

pork knuckles...not your roasted western style, but the duper OILY chinese kind...

chicken in sesame oil. hmm maybe oily chinese dishes make a good base for ice creams?

basil (green) and pork floss (beige)

btw the ice cream aint cheap. some goes at $5 a scope. for those who're visiting taiwan in the near future *nudges darryl* please go buy yourself a traumatising experience :P

Fried To-fu Reinterpreted

ermm i dont have the habit of spreading to-fu on my bread hur hur, this is kinda off-topic, but while i was searching for 'weird food spreads', i chanced upon this:

Fried Fermented To-fu with Strawberry Sauce.

Fermented to-fu = 'Smelly to-fu' in chinese. it's to-fu that is soaked and fermented in a soy sauce mixture for days, and later deep fried and served with chilli.

Imagine that with strawberry sauce. on top of the chilli, the soy sauce, the fermented tofu.

Eww?

oh yeah this is invented by some strawberry farm in Taiwan. See, Taiwanese are innovative people *beams*

ohh i came across another strawberry-bacon-egg-omelette thingy too. but i cldnt find any pics *shrug*. hmm maybe i'd try making my own. or try it the next time i go back to Taiwan~ (it's said to be good! and if americans can eat peanut butter (salty) with jam (sweet), wat's wrong with bacon (salty) and strawberries (sweet) ?! )

hmmm. all the (weird) food talk's making me hungry. getting lunch~ later peeps~
